Percentage change

  1. City budget in 2005 is $4 million; 2006 is $5 million.  How much of an increase?
    • Difference: $5 million – $4 million = $1 million. 
    • Divided by original amount: $1 million / $4 million = ¼ or 25 percent increase
  2. City budget in 2005 is $5 million; 2006, $4 million.  How much of a decrease?
    • Difference = $1 million
    • Divided into original amount: $1 million / $5 million = 1/5 or 20 percent increase
  3. State budget in 2007 is $47 billion; in 2008, it is $64 billion. How much of an increase?
    • Difference = $17 billion
    • Divided into original amount: $17 billion / $47 billion = 36.2 percent increase

    • Objective?
    • Organizational bias?
  • Sample size 
    • Large enough?  Margin of error?
  • Wording of questions 
    • “Does the government waste your hard-earned money?”
  • Demographics
    • Who is represented (or not represented)?
